Unlike solids or liquids, the volume of gases can be compressed. As an example, consider a 10-litre oxygen cylinder with a pressure of 200 bar. This cylinder contains 10 x 200 = 2000 l of oxygen. With flowmeters, the downstream products that build up different back pressures pose a problem. This is how a humidifier differs significantly from a simple tube with a nasal cannula. A pressure-compensated flowmeter delivers the set flow rate regardless of downstream products. However, a constant supply pressure is important. MEDAP FINA FLOW flowmeters are calibrated to a pressure of 5 bar. That is the pressure commonly used in German central gas supply systems.
Tube flowmeters are infinitely adjustable, whereas click-stop flowmeters can only be set to a certain number of fixed levels. In addition, the floating ball shows the exact flow rate toward the patient at all times, thereby providing a simple means of monitoring.
